Matthew Shepard Foundation and Hate Crime Legislation

Establishment of the Foundation

The Matthew Shepard Foundation was created to advocate for equality and support the LGBT community following the tragic death of Matthew Shepard.

Hate Crimes Prevention Act

Passed in 2009, the Hate Crimes Prevention Act expanded federal hate crime protections to include those targeted due to sexual orientation and gender identity.
